Webcam not working? Try this

  • Permission: click the lock icon next to the address, set Camera to Allow and reload.
  • Used by another app: only one app can usually use the camera at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or Discord.
  • Privacy shutter: many laptops have a small slider or a key (often F8 or F10) that covers or switches off the camera.
  • Windows privacy: Settings → Privacy → Camera → allow apps and desktop apps.
  • macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → enable your browser.
  • Drivers: update or reinstall the camera driver in Device Manager.

Resolution and frame rate explained

The test asks your camera for its best picture (up to Full HD) and shows what it actually sends. Common results:

  • 640×480 – old or basic webcam (0.3 MP)
  • 1280×720 – HD, typical for laptops (0.9 MP)
  • 1920×1080 – Full HD (2.1 MP)

The frame rate is how many pictures per second you get. 30 FPS is smooth for video calls. In a dark room many webcams drop to 15 FPS or lower, so add light if the video looks choppy.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

No. The video is shown only in your browser. Snapshots are created on your device and saved only if you download them.

Why is my resolution lower than advertised?

The browser, the camera mode or a USB 2.0 port can limit it. Some cameras also lower resolution in low light.

Why is the image mirrored?

Most apps show a mirror image because it feels natural, like a mirror. Other people see you the right way round. Use the Mirror switch to change the preview.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Open the page in your mobile browser. You can switch between the front and back camera in the device list.
