How to test your microphone
- Click Start mic test and allow microphone access.
- Speak, clap or tap the mic. The green bar and waveform should move.
- If you have more than one mic, pick it from the list.
- Press Record 5 s and play it back to hear the real sound quality.
Microphone not working? Try this
- Permission: click the lock icon next to the address, set Microphone to Allow and reload.
- Wrong device: choose the correct mic in the list above, and in your system sound settings.
- Muted: check the mute switch on your headset or the mute key on your laptop.
- Used by another app: close Zoom, Teams, Discord or OBS and try again.
- Windows privacy: Settings → Privacy → Microphone → allow apps and desktop apps.
- macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → enable your browser.
Reading the results
The level bar shows how loud the input is right now. Normal speech should reach the middle of the bar. If it barely moves, raise the input volume in your system settings. If it hits the end all the time, lower it to avoid distortion.
The sample rate is how many times per second the sound is measured. 44,100 Hz or 48,000 Hz is normal for voice and music.
Frequently asked questions
Is my voice recorded or sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The 5-second recording stays on your device and disappears when you close the page.
Why does the level bar not move?
Usually the wrong microphone is selected, the mic is muted, or another app is using it. See the troubleshooting list above.
Does this work for headsets and USB mics?
Yes. Any microphone your computer or phone can use will show up in the device list.
Can I test my mic on a phone?
Yes. Open the page in your mobile browser and allow microphone access when asked.
