Dead Pixel Test

Fill your whole screen with solid colors and look closely for tiny dots that don’t match. It’s the quickest way to check a new monitor, laptop, TV or phone for dead or stuck pixels.

Click a color or the button. In full screen, click or press → to change color and Esc to exit. Clean your screen first so dust doesn’t look like a dead pixel.

Stuck pixel fixer

⚠️ This flashes bright colors very quickly. Don’t use it if you are sensitive to flashing lights or have photosensitive epilepsy.

How to check for dead pixels

  1. Wipe your screen with a soft, dry cloth so dust isn’t mistaken for a pixel.
  2. Click Start full-screen test.
  3. Look slowly over the whole screen on each color: red, green, blue, white, black and the rest.
  4. Click or press the arrow key to switch color. Press Esc when you are done.

Dead pixel vs stuck pixel

  • Dead pixel: always black. It is easiest to see on white or bright colors. It usually cannot be repaired.
  • Stuck pixel: always one color (red, green, blue or white). It shows best on black or a different color. It can sometimes be fixed.
  • Bright dot on black: a pixel that stays lit. This is a stuck pixel, too.

Many manufacturers only replace a screen if it has more than a certain number of bad pixels. Check your warranty’s pixel policy and test new screens soon after buying.

How the stuck pixel fixer works

The fixer flashes red, green, blue, black and white very fast. For a stuck pixel, this can sometimes “wake up” the sub-pixel. Move the flashing area over the stuck pixel (or use full screen) and let it run for 10 to 30 minutes. It does not work for every pixel and it cannot fix a dead (black) pixel.

Do not watch the flashing screen if bright flashing lights bother you.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dead pixel spread?

Usually not. A single dead pixel normally stays the same. Many new bad pixels appearing over time can point to a failing panel.

Does this test work on phones and TVs?

Yes. Open the page on any device with a browser. On phones, tap the screen to change color.

Can the fixer damage my screen?

No, it only shows colors. But it can be uncomfortable to watch, so look away while it runs.

How many dead pixels are acceptable?

It depends on the manufacturer. Some accept a few bad pixels before replacement, others offer zero-dead-pixel guarantees. Check the warranty terms.
