How the CPS test works
- Choose a test time: 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 or 100 seconds.
- Click inside the blue box. Your first click starts the timer.
- Keep clicking as fast as you can until the time reaches zero.
- Your CPS is your total clicks divided by the number of seconds.
Short tests (1–5 seconds) show your top burst speed. Longer tests (30–100 seconds) show your stamina and how well you keep your speed up.
What is a good CPS?
Most people click around 6 to 7 times per second with normal clicking. Gamers who practise special techniques can go much higher, especially in short tests.
| CPS | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 5 | Beginner or relaxed clicking |
| 5 – 6.5 | Average |
| 6.5 – 8 | Above average |
| 8 – 10 | Very fast, typical for active gamers |
| 10 – 14 | Excellent, usually with jitter or butterfly clicking |
| Over 14 | Exceptional, often drag clicking or very trained techniques |
These ranges are a rough guide. Your mouse, browser and test length all change the result.
Clicking techniques: normal, jitter, butterfly and drag
- Normal clicking: One finger, relaxed wrist. Most people reach 5 to 8 CPS.
- Jitter clicking: You tense your forearm so your finger vibrates on the button. It can reach 10 to 14 CPS but tires you quickly.
- Butterfly clicking: Two fingers tap the same button one after the other. Many players reach 12 to 20 CPS.
- Drag clicking: You slide a finger across the button so friction makes it bounce. It can register very high CPS on suitable mice.
Some game servers limit or ban very high CPS or some of these techniques, so check the rules before using them in competitive play.
Tips to click faster (and safely)
- Use a light mouse with responsive switches and a firm grip.
- Rest your hand on the desk and let your finger do the work.
- Practise short bursts, then build up to longer tests.
- Take breaks. Fast clicking for a long time can strain your hand and wrist.
- Stop if you feel pain. Hard techniques like jitter clicking are not worth an injury.
- Heavy clicking techniques can wear out mouse buttons faster.
Frequently asked questions
What does CPS mean?
CPS stands for clicks per second. It is your total number of clicks divided by the length of the test in seconds.
What is the average CPS?
Most people score about 6 to 7 CPS with normal clicking. Over 10 CPS is very fast and usually needs a special technique.
Which test time should I use?
Use 1–5 seconds to test your top speed and 10–60 seconds for a fairer, more stable result. The 100-second test measures endurance.
Does this test work on phones?
Yes, you can tap the box on a touch screen. Phone results usually differ from mouse results, so compare on the same device.
